More Than a Job
As Wise Moves grows, so does its staff. And right now, the company is seeking more people to help their clients organize, downsize and move.
But the company is looking for more than just a willing worker with excellent organizational skills and a can-do attitude – although those qualities are certainly important, says Wise Moves managing director Erin Martinko.
“What we hire for is emotional intelligence,” she said. Moving is a trying experience in the best of circumstances, and being able to guide clients through the process requires caring and empathy so the Wise Moves staff can take the lead – and the stress – on sorting, packing, selling and donating.
“Our staff is also very engaged in our service, because they too find it gratifying to relieve the clients of downsizing and moving,” Martinko said.
Staff members live in Maryland, Virginia and the District, and usually work on the jobs that are closest to their homes, explained Wise Moves Managing Partner Tracy Niro.
A typical move may require two to three demanding days of sorting and packing, and Wise Moves prefers to keep the same crew on each job from start to finish to help ease the disruption to the client and see the same familiar faces over the course of the moving process.
Packing days start about 10 a.m. and crews usually finish for the day around 2-3 p.m. “A lot of our staff are part time, and they love the opportunity to have those hours and the flexibility it provides them,” Niro said. Some Wise Move staff members are parents of young children and enjoy the combination of gratifying work, a competitive salary and the opportunity to meet the school bus when the kids come home.
Both Wise Moves leaders are proud of the employees they’ve hired and the reputation they’ve helped garner for the company for compassionate, caring services. “Our staff makes us look good every day,” Martinko said.
